Social Emotional Learning and Mental Wellness

ABOUT

According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL is “an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.”

The Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, Student Support and Outreach (SSO) offers a variety of Social Emotional and Mental Wellbeing program services.

WHAT IS SEL?

Student Support and Outreach offers a variety of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Mental Wellbeing supports including:

1.) SCHOOL COUNSELING CONSORTIUM

The Sutter County Counseling Consortium provides school counseling services to students across 12 schools districts throughout Sutter County, supported by a team of 7 School Counselors.

Collaborative Professional Learning

Counselors participate in Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings to collaborate, share effective practices, review student and program data, problem-solve emerging needs, and continuously improve counseling services across participating schools.

Through PLC collaboration and the MTSS framework, counselors work together to ensure that services are responsive to student needs and aligned with school and countywide priorities. This collaborative approach supports consistency in counseling practices while allowing services to be tailored to the unique needs of each school community.

Counseling Programs

The Consortium’s goal is to support student success by improving attendance, strengthening academic achievement, and increasing high school graduation rates. School Counselors provide students with support in three key areas:

- Academic Development: Help students develop strategies and skills to succeed academically, set goals, and stay engaged in school

- Social-Emotional Development: Help students understand and manage emotions, develop interpersonal skills, build positive relationships, and navigate challenges that may affect their success at school.

- College and Career Readiness: Help students explore and plan for postsecondary pathways, including higher education, military service, career and technical education, and the workforce.

2.) Systems & School Improvement

Integrated MTSS Support

SSO helps schools connect academic, behavioral, social-emotional, attendance, and other student supports into an integrated system. Through data-informed decision-making, collaboration, and continuous improvement, we strengthen schools’ ability to identify needs early and provide coordinated support for every student.

CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (CCSPP)

SSO supports Community Schools by strengthening collaboration across schools, county agencies, and community partners. Through coordination and shared planning, the COE helps identify community resources, align initiatives and services, use data to inform local priorities, and reduce duplication of efforts. This work strengthens a connected, countywide system of support that helps schools and communities better respond to the needs of students and families.

Data-Informed Planning & Continuous Improvement

Support for using data to identify needs, monitor implementation, inform decisions, and strengthen programs and services.

SEL Universal Survey Administration

SEL Universal Survey Administration, data collection and coordination, needs assessments, data analysis, program monitoring, and support for using findings to guide continuous improvement.
