Explanation of Terms
Course Description:
The course description states the major emphasis and content of a course.
Elective Courses:
Elective courses are ones that are not required, but that broaden students' experiences. They are made available to provide a more complete program of concept acquisition, subject-matter competence, skill development, and enrichment. Elective courses are provided for a variety of purposes: partial fulfillment of academic requirements for admission to universities, enrichment, fulfillment of interest in diverse subject areas, development of useful life skills, development of further competence in a special interest area, or acquisition of entry-level job skills.
Required Courses:
These courses represent the essential core of learning experiences that address the California Content Standards. Students are required to successfully complete these courses for a high school diploma.
State (or California) Content Standards:
The state content standards identify what students should know and be able to do in each course.
