Course Descriptions
Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Foreign Language Courses
The ten credit requirement for visual arts, performing arts or foreign language may be taken as an independent study. Prior approval is required. Students can earn 1-10 credits for successful completion of these courses. Note: Not all courses are offered every term.
Yearbook (5 credits)
Students will understand the fundamentals of planning and producing a school yearbook from start to finish. They will learn basic photography, i.e. taking and cropping pictures for publication. They will use the computer to write copy and prepare layouts. Students will conduct interviews, write and format reports, meet deadlines, and prepare the yearbook for final publication.
American Cinema (10 credits)
Students will analyze films in various genres from the PBS Video Series American Cinema. The history of filmmaking in Hollywood and the studio system will be examined. Movie decisions that directors make will be explored. Students will also study the major techniques for making movies.
Visual or Performing Arts Through Research (up to 10 credits)
Research project on approved topic is to be completed independently by the student. Records of improved competency, self-monitoring, and analysis of results are required. Student identifies an area of interest based on the California Visual and Performing Arts standards; writes 5-6 key questions to guide the research; meets with teacher to identify research, related activities for the project, and the number of credits to be earned. Each research project will be assigned a grade based on successful completion of the project.
Opportunities for these research projects are:
Community Theater
Students participate in a variety of community theater activities, e.g. acting, props, public relations, scripting.
Film Review
This project involves researching, reviewing and evaluating films from various decades.
Dance or Music Lessons
Students study the history of music or dance from a particular time period, review, learn to play an instrument or participate in dance lessons, and prepare a presentation on either video, Powerpoint or oral presentation.
Art History
Students study the history of art from a particular time period and produce an original artwork depicting that time period. They will prepare a presentation on their research and artwork.
